Peer Review

Chive supports open peer review with inline comments and formal endorsements.

Review Types

Inline Comments

Readers can leave comments on specific sections of a preprint:

  1. Select text in the PDF viewer
  2. Click "Add Comment"
  3. Write your comment
  4. Submit

Comments are linked to your AT Protocol identity and visible to all readers.

Formal Reviews

Formal reviews provide structured feedback:

  • Overall assessment (accept, minor revision, major revision, reject)
  • Detailed comments by section
  • Optional score (1-5)
  • Reviewer identity (public)

Writing a Review

Access the Review Form

  1. Open a preprint
  2. Click "Write Review" in the sidebar
  3. Complete the structured form

Submission

Click "Submit Review" to post your review. Reviews are stored in your PDS and indexed by Chive.

Responding to Reviews

Authors can respond to reviews:

  1. Open the review
  2. Click "Respond"
  3. Address specific points
  4. Submit response

Responses appear threaded under the original review.

Review Guidelines

Be Constructive

Focus on how the work can be improved. Avoid personal attacks.

Be Specific

Reference specific sections, figures, or claims. Quote relevant passages.

Be Timely

Complete reviews within a reasonable time frame. If you cannot complete a review, decline promptly.

Declare Conflicts

Disclose any conflicts of interest before reviewing.

Review Visibility

All reviews on Chive are public and signed. This promotes accountability and reduces bias.

Review Statistics

Your review history appears on your profile:

  • Number of reviews written
  • Average review length
  • Fields reviewed

These statistics are visible to other users and help establish your expertise.
