Sharing to Bluesky
Chive is built on AT Protocol, the same network that powers Bluesky. You can share preprints, reviews, and discussions directly to Bluesky.
Connecting your Bluesky account
If you signed into Chive with your Bluesky account, you're already connected. Otherwise:
- Go to Settings → Connected Accounts
- Click Connect Bluesky
- Authorize Chive to post on your behalf
Sharing a preprint
Quick share
- On any preprint page, click Share
- Select Share to Bluesky
- A compose window opens with:
- Paper title
- Authors
- Link to the Chive page
- Optional abstract excerpt
- Edit the post text if desired
- Click Post
Share with comment
Add your thoughts when sharing:
- Click Share → Share to Bluesky
- Write your comment above the paper card
- The paper appears as an embedded card in your post
- Click Post
Sharing from your profile
Share your own papers:
- Go to your profile
- Find the paper
- Click the share icon
- Select Share to Bluesky
Sharing reviews
When you write a review on Chive, you can share it to Bluesky:
- After submitting your review, click Share Review
- The post includes:
- Your review summary
- Link to the full review thread
- Paper title and authors
- Edit if needed, then Post
Quote-posting reviews
To share someone else's review:
- On the review, click Share
- Select Quote to Bluesky
- Add your commentary
- Post
Backlinks
When someone mentions a Chive preprint on Bluesky, it creates a backlink:

- Go to any preprint page
- Click the Bluesky tab
- See all Bluesky posts mentioning this paper

The preprint page shows:
- Total Bluesky mentions
- Recent posts
- Notable accounts discussing the paper
Mentions and autocomplete
Mentioning authors
When composing a Bluesky post through Chive:
- Type
@to mention someone - Autocomplete shows:
- Paper authors (if they have Bluesky handles)
- Your Bluesky follows
- Select to insert their handle
Mentioning preprints
Paste a Chive URL into your post:
- The URL automatically converts to a rich card
- The card shows title, authors, and abstract preview
- Clicking the card opens the paper on Chive
Notifications
Bluesky activity
When someone interacts with your shared content on Bluesky:
- Likes, reposts, and replies appear in your Chive notifications
- Click to view the activity on Bluesky
Chive activity
When someone engages with your paper on Chive:
- Reviews, endorsements, and comments appear in your Chive notifications
- Optionally share these to Bluesky
Privacy and control
What Chive can do
With your permission, Chive can:
- Post to Bluesky on your behalf
- Read your Bluesky profile (handle, display name)
- Access public posts for backlink detection
What Chive cannot do
- Read your DMs
- Post without your explicit action
- Access your followers list
- Modify your Bluesky profile
Revoking access
- Go to Settings → Connected Accounts
- Click Disconnect next to Bluesky
- Or revoke from Bluesky: Settings → App Passwords

Troubleshooting
Post failed to send
- Check your Bluesky connection in Settings
- Verify your Bluesky account is in good standing
- Try disconnecting and reconnecting
Backlinks not appearing
- Backlinks are indexed every few minutes
- The post must contain the full Chive URL
- Private Bluesky posts are not indexed
Card preview not loading
- Wait a few seconds for the preview to generate
- Check that the preprint URL is correct
- Some older preprints may not have preview images
